L.A. ties RSL to extend winless skid to 11

09/07/2008 - Carson, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rookie Bryan Jordan had a goal and an assist in his first start in Major League Soccer, but Los Angeles settled for a 2-2 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday and its winless skid reached 11 matches.

Jordan, who had only played seven minutes all season, scored the first goal in the ninth minute and assisted on Edson Buddle's game-tying goal in the 69th at The Home Depot Center.

Without stars David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Eddie Lewis - the most notable players on international duty - Jordan helped pick up the slack but L.A. still hasn't won since June 14.

Los Angeles (6-9-8) used the tie to avoid falling into sole possession of last place in the Western Conference. L.A. was tied with San Jose, but it defeated D.C. United 2-1 on Saturday to jump to fourth. The Galaxy are now tied with FC Dallas at the bottom.

Real Salt Lake (8-8-7), which got a goal and an assist from substitute Yura Movsisyan, moved within four points of first-place Houston. The Dynamo host Kansas City on Sunday.

Jordan put L.A. in front early, scoring his first MLS goal just minutes after Real Salt Lake had a goal erased for offsides and lost Fabian Espindola to a freak injury.

Buddle, who scored his 13th goal later in the game, set up the goal by sending a shot on goal that was deflected by RSL goalie Nick Rimando right to Jordan. The rookie finished into an empty net.

Just 12 minutes later, Movsisyan - who replaced Espindola after he was injured doing a flip after scoring the goal that was wiped out - tied the match. Kenny Deuchar and Chris Wingert helped set up the goal, and Movsisyan finished past a charging Josh Wicks - who was making his first MLS start in goal for L.A.

Real Salt Lake's Will Johnson put his side in front just seven minutes after halftime, working a great give-and-go with Movsisyan for his first goal. After the great passing combination, Johnson fired off the inside of the right post.

L.A. avoided its sixth loss during its skid when Buddle tied the match in the 69th minute. Jordan helped set up the goal by making a similar play to Buddle on his goal, but slid the ball across the area instead of shooting.

The Galaxy's Alan Gordon got a slight touch on the ball right in front of the net to deflect the cross to Buddle, and he finished from a few yards out.

L.A., which is 0-1-2 under new coach Bruce Arena, will try to break its streak on Sept. 13 when it visits Kansas City.

Real Salt Lake will try to solidify its hold on second place in the conference on Sept. 13 when it visits Red Bull New York.

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.

Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.

With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.

Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
